At Northern Valley Allergy, Asthma, and Sinus Center, we prioritize providing a comprehensive diagnostic approach to skin allergy conditions that affect your daily life. While many rashes and skin irritations can be identified through a physical exam or traditional allergy testing, some cases require a more detailed look at the cellular level, known as skin biopsies.
What is a Skin Biopsy?
A skin biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which a sample of skin tissue is removed, processed, and examined under a microscope. Several different methods may be used to obtain a skin sample, depending on the size and location of the abnormal area of skin, called a skin lesion.
The skin sample is placed in a solution, such as formaldehyde, or in a sterile container if infection is suspected. In each of these procedures, the tissue is processed and then examined under a microscope.
Why is a Skin Biopsy Performed?
Skin biopsies are essential for diagnosing a wide range of conditions, particularly when symptoms like chronic itching, redness, or blistering do not respond to standard treatments. At Northern Valley Allergy, Asthma and Sinus Center, we use skin biopsies to differentiate between various types of dermatitis or conditions, such as:
- Allergic Contact Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is inflammation of the skin due to one or more factors. We’ll pinpoint the cause of the reactions, which is usually cosmetics, soaps, or environmental triggers.
- Chronic Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): This chronic, inflammatory skin condition can be a nuisance when it flares up. Our office will develop ways to treat and control your symptoms.
- Hives (Urticaria): Hives are red, itchy, raised areas of skin. We’ll determine if deeper skin inflammation or vasculitis is present.
Additionally, a biopsy is the primary tool used to rule out or confirm skin cancer and to identify bacterial or fungal infections that may be masquerading as an allergy.
What to Expect During the Procedure
A skin biopsy is a routine in-office procedure that typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
First, the area is thoroughly cleaned. A local anesthetic is then injected to numb the skin, ensuring you feel no pain during the sample removal. After the sample is taken, the site is bandaged, and we provide you with clear instructions for simple at-home wound care.
