Northern Vallery Allergy | Spirometry – Lung Function Testing

Spirometry – Lung Function Testing

Spirometry is a common lung function test that measures how much air you can breathe in and out, as well as how quickly you can exhale. This test helps determine whether your lungs are working properly and can detect conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other breathing disorders. The test is quick, non-invasive, and provides immediate results.

What Does Spirometry Check For?

Spirometry evaluates several key aspects of lung function, including:

  • Forced Vital Capacity (FVC): The total amount of air you can exhale forcefully after taking a deep breath.
  • Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1): The amount of air you can forcefully exhale in one second, which helps determine the severity of airflow obstruction.
  • Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF): How fast you can breathe out, often used to monitor asthma.

These measurements help diagnose conditions like asthma, COPD, restrictive lung disease, and other breathing disorders.

What to Expect During the Spirometry Test

The test is straightforward and typically takes about 15–30 minutes. You’ll be asked to take a deep breath and exhale as hard and fast as possible into a spirometer, a device that records airflow. This may be repeated several times to ensure accurate results. In some cases, a bronchodilator (a medication that opens the airways) may be given to see how lung function changes before and after use.

Preparing for Lung Function Testing

For the most accurate results, keep the following in mind before your test:

  • Avoid smoking or heavy meals for at least a few hours before the test.
  • Refrain from using bronchodilators or inhalers unless instructed otherwise.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows for full lung expansion.
  • Follow any specific instructions provided by your doctor.
